Aims and Rationale:

The programme of studies in this short course aims to take students through the following three steps and equip them with the knowledge required for successful communication in intercultural settings.

Aims:

• To develop the students’ awareness of the complexity of communication across cultural boundaries and to raise their awareness of the barriers to communication presented by cross-cultural differences
• To enable students to anticipate the challenges to communication presented by typical situations of intercultural communication
• To enable students to reflect on their own experiences of intercultural communication situations and to analyse them in terms of the concepts of cognitive and social pragmatics, including politeness theory, relevance theory, critical linguistics, contrastive analysis, and translation theory. 

Rationale:

The increasing incidence of communication in intercultural settings is one of the consequences of globalisation which present a range of specific challenges. People are naturally oriented towards developing the competencies required for interacting with those from the same cultural backgrounds as their own. For this reason the development of intercultural communicative competence calls for explicit teaching/learning and practice. The first step in this process is to develop a general awareness of the types of challenges presented by intercultural communication situations. The second step is to develop the conceptual tools for reflecting on, analysing and discussing the challenges presented by intercultural communication situations. The third step is to learn particular strategies and skills required for overcoming the barriers to successful communication in intercultural settings.

4. Critical Discourse Analysis: Language and ideology in Communication

5. Translating cultures: a pragmatic perspective
